Vitorinha: I want to honour Marta as Brazil's No10

Vitorinha scored a stunning free kick in Brazil's 4-1 win over Tanzania in their opening match at the FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup 2026™. Three days later she found the net again and played a key role in the move that led to Brazil's third goal in their 3-0 win over Canada.

She wears the famous No10 shirt, previously donned by Pele and still worn by Marta. It's an iconic number in the country, but rather than buckling under its heavy weight, Vitorinha thrives in it.

"There is a responsibility that comes with it, but I see it as a positive thing," Vitorinha told FIFA "I know about all the great players who have worn this No10 shirt, like our queen Marta. I'm going to keep honouring her shirt and, God willing, we'll leave here as champions."

Even before the start of the U-20 Women's World Cup, Vitorinha had said that every member of the Brazil squad "takes to the pitch for her team-mate and for the history she carries". She has been playing to honour the history of the No10 shirt and, of course, her own personal journey.

"When I celebrate on the pitch, I think about practically every moment since I was a little girl,” she said. “I want to honour my family and everyone who has always been there for me. Only those who have been with me from the beginning know how hard I've had to work to be here today.”

Against Tanzania, she scored Brazil's fourth goal in style, curling in a superb free kick from the corner of the penalty area. The margin of victory ended up giving Brazil a significant goal difference in a difficult group that also includes Canada and England.

Three days later, Brazil's place in the knockout stages was confirmed, with another contribution from Vitorinha.

Against Canada, Brazil executed their high press effectively – mirroring the pressure applied by the senior Seleção side to their opponents – and were rewarded with timely turnovers. Having scored twice in the opening match, Evelin won possession and turned provider this time, playing the ball to Vitorinha, who fired a low shot from outside the area to score Brazil's second goal of the game

Three minutes later, the Sao Paulo player received the ball in midfield and picked out a beautiful pass to Dulce, who won the race with her marker, reached the byline and sent a low cross into the area for Brendha to score. Vitorinha may not have been credited with an assist for the goal, but her vision had spotted a seemingly impossible opening.

"I'm very happy. I don't think I could have imagined this even in my wildest dreams,” said Vitorinha. “I want to thank God, my family, the team and the coaching staff. Only we know how hard we've been working since the first call-up. We're showing that this is Brazil.”
