Tanzania take solace in Winfrida's landmark strike

Tanzania may have come up short in their inaugural match at the FIFA Women's U-20 World Cup™ but they have plenty of positives to take into their upcoming games. Winfrida Gerald's inaugural goal in the global showpiece against Brazil will especially live long in the memory.

After being brought down in the penalty area by the Brazilian centre-back Sofia, in the first half, the Tanzanian stepped up and dispatched the resulting spot-kick, levelling the scores at 1-1. However, A Amarelinha scored three times in the second half to take the game away from Bakari Shime's side, who focused more on the lessons learned from the defeat – rather than feeling disappointed – when speaking to FIFA after the game.

"I must start by saying that I don't feel sad, because this was our first game in this tournament. Our players' heads dropped a bit after Brazil's second and third goals, but, in general, we did more than enough considering it was our first game. I hope we can correct our mistakes and come back stronger," said Shime.

The Tanzania coach was full of praise for Winfrida, in particular, having written history for his nation: "She performed brilliantly. Winfrida won the penalty and scored Tanzania's first-ever goal in this tournament. It's a huge moment for her and the team. It was great for the team to get their first goal of the tournament."

Up next for Tanzania is a showdown with England on 8 September – a chance for the African outfit to start putting into practice the lessons learned from their opening game against Brazil. "We'll work hard over the next few days to correct our defensive errors, and I hope our team will manage to score again in our second game," Shime added.
